Close to ten years ago, my husband and I stayed in a Bed and Breakfast in Spring Lake, New Jersey called the Normand Inn. I had stayed in many hotels throughout the country and internationally, but never a B&B. Walking through the front door of this establishment made me feel like I was entering a different era. The colors were rich and the craftsmanship was remarkable. I always loved the “Victorian” style; it made me feel…..well, a bit royal.
I knew then that I would always choose to stay at a B&B vs. a hotel if I had the choice. Since my stay in Spring Lake, I have dreamed of owning my own B&B where my husband and I would work with marriages in crisis. One day….
We have some wonderful B&Bs in Piscataquis County. I have been to several, and will eventually blog about them all. I plan to showcase many properties in this blog, particularly those on the market with unique qualities. Today, I want to focus on one in particular. This property IS on the market, and I’ll tell you this.. if I had the money, I would purchase it myself.
The Guilford Bed and Breakfast is located in the center of Piscataquis County. Harland and Isobel Young invited me in for a wonderful visit in January. Strangely, I had the same feeling when I walked through the front door as I did ten years ago at the Normandy Inn; this was something truly special, and I was lucky to be here. As they walked me through the halls of this beautiful home I was amazed how much work had been done, not in renovations but in RESTORATIONS, right down to the smallest details. The Youngs have invested tens of thousands of dollars into this historical property, and they have done it with all of their hearts. In fact, Harland seemed a bit heavy-hearted with the concept of selling after pouring in so much of himself. He hopes the next owners will maintain and care for the property as he has; that every careful improvement and restoration will not have been made in vain.
After devoting years of their lives to the B&B, the Youngs are ready to invest in something else – their retirement, their marriage and their family. It has been a rewarding season for them, a wonderful chapter in their lives – but it is time to close this book and begin writing a new story.
The Guilford B&B has been on the market for a while and has recently dropped in price down to $349,000. The living quarters are completely separate from the area of the home where guests stay. The rooms are so beautiful and peaceful. Sitting with them for afternoon tea and sweet conversation was the highlight of my week. Walking back to my car after the visit, I surveyed the grounds once more, took in a deep breath, and whispered, “ One day…”
If you are reading this, and you, like me, have ever dreamed of owning a B & B… this is something you should look at before it’s too late! In the meantime, if you need a place to escape for the weekend, I give it 5 stars.
